What I have learned from this course is that there are so many ethical situations going on in the world then I ever really knew about. I tend to not to watch the news or keep myself updated on current events due to I just don’t like to hear bad news or I simply don’t have the time to do so. The time I have spent reading and viewing Dr. Cate’s videos has made me have a better understanding of how the world we live in today, views what is morally wrong or right.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Most times I do not have time to watch the news. Sometimes I feel that the news is also based on what the media wants us to hear. I do not need to hear about multiple police shootings and not hear about other relevant topics in the media.
DeleteI really do not surprise easily. I can be persuaded to change my view on something, but it might take some hard core facts.
ReplyDeleteThis course has made me consider every case I read about. To look at the perspective of all involved and carefully consider what I want to say. I made me look deeply into what I believe.
I would take another philosophy course. It is very engaging and informative. Time and money would be my biggest barriers to completing another ethics course.
I do have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of biomedical ethics. Questions like who deserves healthcare? Is healthcare a right? How can the greatest number of people obtain healthcare? What about euthanasia? What is health? These are all things I have considered during this course, and more.
I do appreciate the relevance of what is real, what it all means and why we must always pursue what is ethical and moral. Without these things, what we do has no value.
My skills of analysis will always need to be expanded and critiqued, I feel I have improved because of this course. Written and oral communication were my weakness until about 12-15 years ago. That is when I realized I was able to change and improve things in my life with communication, both oral and written.
But I must say., thank goodness for our instructors, Grammarly and other technology that aid us in doing our best.
What surprised me most about this course was that we all mostly agreed on the blogs. With so many different points of view, we all used common sense and fought for the best interest of each case study patient. I enjoyed learning about philosophy and would not be opposed to taking another class...as long as papers weren't involved! I believe that from this course I have a better understanding of biomedical ethics and how it pertains to my everyday work. I feel that I have improved with being more open with my blogging in this course.
ReplyDeleteThis course made me realize that the practice of medicine isn't as concrete or objective as I thought. I was not aware of the ethical and moral decisions providers are presented with in everyday practice. The principals of bio-medical ethics is just the core to many theories. I found it interesting to read about the metaphors and models of patient to doctor relationship presented by Childress and Siegler. This provided me with a perspective that I've never thought of between the patient and physician relationship. I have developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives. It's been a challenge for me at times to think "outside the box" and to clearly explain my viewpoints on particular subjects. Overall, I believe that I've improved with my communication skills using the bases of different ethical views and technology such as blogging! Overall, I've enjoyed this course and would consider to take another philosophy course (but I do agree with Sara--If there were no paper's involved)!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this class. I definitely would take another if I had the time and money, though I think being in class to discuss topics would be more tactically fun. I find it difficult to put my thoughts down in written form so the blogging was good practice, though it took a lot of time. I still wrote a rough copy on a notepad though. What surprised me was that I could be persuaded to change my thinking with regards to locked in syndrome. I was the one who would have been proactive when the guy from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly wanted to die, letting him have his wish. That show gave me a different perspective on the aspect of life. What I didn't like about the class was I felt like I brought my work home with me, which I try not to do. What I mean by that is there is a lot of emotional turmoil with death, diseases and families dynamics at work and I felt like I was reliving it at home with some of the videos. No boohooing at home allowed!
ReplyDeleteI would not be opposed to taking another class if I had the time and money.I think your death and dying class would be very interesting. But I think it would be more beneficial to me if it was actually in a classroom setting. I have been overwhelmed at times in this class because of blogging and papers and content. I feel like I would not have been as overwhelmed if the class was taught in the classroom, I would have been able to ask more questions and maybe been able to grasp the concepts a little better.Maybe that is just the old fogy in me and I need to get with times:] I feel like this class does relate with everything we deal with in healthcare. Not everybody is going to view everything the same way. I feel like I have expanded my views on biomedical ethics and they way that people think and feel. I thought it was interesting that we all as medical professional had the same views on most of the things. What surprised me was that I really enjoyed the videos that we watched. Who would have thought I would have enjoyed a movie that I had to read subtitles. Thanks for all your patience and understanding with us.
ReplyDeleteI agree Sherry that it would have been more beneficial in a class setting and that a class in death and dying would be interesting.
DeleteI would have to say I really enjoyed this class, so far it has been my favorite! I would definitely take another class (if I had the time)! There are so many ethical issues that happen on a daily basis that I was unaware of. I have to agree with Sherry about it being in a actual class room and not online. I also was overwhelmed with the content at times. This class made me stop and think "what if it was me or my family in this situation?" It makes you consider all the different paths that are available. It was very interesting to see everyone else's view on each topic.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed stretching my brain and looking at ethical issues from a perspective I may not have considered. It is surprising that a lot of issues in our country, and especially ethical ones often medical related. We have so many different areas in healthcare that just about every issue touches it . Even though this was a very interesting and somewhat enjoyable class (very time consuming), I don't plan on taking another, or ANY other classes just for fun, HA! I'm looking forward to reading for pleasure again someday. Overall though, I have learned a great deal about different philosophical perspectives and their application to healthcare. I especially liked the end of life aspects and how we treat patients and families and help them cope through this process. I definitely think this course has helped me improve my critique and analysis, simply because looking from different viewpoints helps analyze situations and create potential different responses.
ReplyDeleteWhat most surprises me are the amount of ethical decisions we make everyday as health care providers. I would definitely sayI have better understanding of bioemedical ethics and would love to take another course and really delve into things when I could devote more time to it. Looking at different ways of looking into complex situations has helped me to more carefully consider that my way is not the only way.
ReplyDeleteI agree. We are faced with making ethical decisions in healthcare almost on a daily basis.
DeleteSomething that I learned in this course that surprised me is that my views on certain things could be changed when given more information and facts. I often think well in that situation I would do ....... but until you are actually faced with a situation you are not sure what you would do.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely would take another philosophy course if time/money were not an issue. I would rather take an actual traditional class and be able to interact and discuss situations in real time with real people and not on line. It is hard to have a discussion/debate on line.
I do feel I have developed and appreciation for the ethical questions in my daily life. Working n hospice has made me think about some ethical situations that I would not want to happen in my own family or decisions I would not want my family to have to make. It has made me look at life in a different way.
I do feel my skills in analysis and critique is somewhat improved. sometimes I find it difficult to articulate what I want to say because my brain thinks faster than I can write or type and my thoughts get away from me.
In the beginning I felt a bit overwhelmed by this course. When I was writing thing I felt as if when you read them you were probably saying WTH is she talking about. Dr. Cate you made this class very interesting and enjoyable. Your positive criticism made me feel as if you valued my opinion even if it was not the same as yours. Thanks for your hard work putting this class together for us.
I feel that this course was a great eye opener to me as a nurse. I honestly feel that every nurse should take this course. There are so many ethical situations that I have been able to examine and discuss with others that I as a nurses deal with very frequently. This cl,ass has opened up my mind and has me focusing on family centered care more than I already did. Education and family support is everything you need in life. I feel that those two things are needed in every case I have examined throughout this course. I would definitely take another course related to this. I truly had fun with this course and learned a lot and I thank you.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this class. I think since we all already work in the healthcare field and have experience with many ethical issues ourselves already most of our posts were in agreement. I think that's because we all have been trained to advocate with the patient and support the decisions they make. I do think taking this class in a classroom setting with live discussion would have made it even more enjoyable and a change of pace from all the other classes that we've taken thus far. Thank you for making this online class great!
ReplyDeleteIt has completely opened my eyes to what I have always felt like I believed, but when faced with a particular question, and when asked in different ways, I found myself doubting what I thought would have been my initial response. I have enjoyed hearing everyone else's responses to help my see a little bit different perspective to common ethical dilemmas that we face regularly. I liked the fact that the class had the medical focus because, of course, that is what we deal with most commonly. I would take other courses that had this similar focus. It helped me express what I wanted to say and respond respectfully while maintaining what I believe in.
ReplyDeleteI learned that I am quite opinionated. This does not really come as a total surprise to me. What does surprise me is how the simple act of taking a step back and looking at both sides makes each perspective a little more credible. I am not so easily swayed. This class has helped me realize that when we disagree with someone, we may not be able to come to an agreement, but we must always treat the other person with dignity. I have found that I now find myself making fewer and fewer rash judgments not only while at work, but in my personal life as well.
ReplyDeleteI would take another philosophy class, but would need a little more time on my hands. Felt a little overwhelmed as it seemed I was never caught up-likely had to do with the initial difficulty I had even getting onto the blog! I do feel as though I learned a lot. There I times when I had a opinion and now I can put some theory behind it.
ReplyDeleteThis class has been very enjoyable. The videos that were shared were the most surprising to me. Being able to see real people and the things they are coping with really touched me. Seeing them have hard life choices and the conversations around those choices was quite educational. Some of the conversations weren't as good as others, but you learn do's and don'ts of those talks. I would definitely take another philosophy class. We al make ethical decisions daily without realizing it most of the time. It is nice to now having some understanding behind those decisions. I have enjoyed expressing myself openly and expanding my way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed seeing things in a different light. Thinking of things in a different way.
ReplyDeleteI would take another class similar to this one. This was a very eye opening class and I think that every nurse or staff member that works in the healthcare field should take this course or one similar. It was a great to be able to think of different ways of going about a situation. I also believe that this course has allowed me to improve in my communication skills.
What has surprised me most about this course is that there are many different perspectives to ethical issues. I had not thought of issues in the way they were presented in the required readings. In the past I had thought my thought process was the best based on my Christian upbringing, anything other was the wrong way. Through this class I have learned that other opinions may not necessarily be wrong just different.
ReplyDeleteI would take another course if time was not a barrier. I think as professionals that deal with other persons on a daily basis and help those people make life choices we need to be educated to the utmost degree. We do not just slap band aids on people we care for them holistically.
I have some grasp of the philosophical dimension of bio medical ethics but have a huge gap to fill. Medicine is always changing. Greater feats are made which require ethical decisions. That is why I feel know one can say they have full grasp of the topic. Just when you do, another procedure will present itself with new decisions to be made.
From this class I feel that I have better skills to analyze and critique arguments and theories. I have developed better skills to hear people with different opinions than mine and form better arguments or agree with their perspective.
I think that this class was good for me in that it made me think about things from a different perspective than I usually did. I had a hard time with the blogs. I guess there are many times when I don't feel like I can really choose a opinion that I feel really strong about. I think I also do better thinking in concrete terms. I am grateful for having had this class though since it did pull me out of my comfort zone. The parts of this class that I really enjoyed revolved around palliative care and death and dying. It was enlightening to see the physicians with their patients as they were nearing the end of their lives. The physicians showed SO much compassion.
