Introductions (1&3May)

By 1 May. Who are you and what do you expect from this class?  Please write 4-5 sentences about yourself, including academic, career, and personal goals relevant to our course in biomedical ethics (why you are in school, what you like to study, where you work/volunteer/spend your time, other relevant experience, something interesting about you, etc.).  It is also helpful if you can upload a picture to Blogger, since this will be where we have the most interaction.

Then please ask questions and/or comment on the posts of at least two of your classmates.  Let's get to know each other. (by 3 May)

  1. Shout out to my fellow classmates. My name is sherry and I currently work in the emergency department at St.Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood. When I'm not at work I enjoy spending time with my family and friends(which i haven't got to do alot of lately).I have enjoyed getting to know these fine nurses that I have been in school with since Oct. After completing my BSN I would like to continue on
with my masters degree in nursing leadership. I hope to gain a better understanding of medical ethics and hopefully have some great conversation and friendly disagreements:)

    1. I agree that this class will lead into some great conversations about ethical topics within the medical field. I am interested to see other views from nurses outside of our scope of practice! Hopefully we will continue on together with this educational journey and obtain our goal with a MSN!

    2. My goal is to obtain a MSN as well!!! I agree with you and I can not wait to see other people's views on the topics!

    3. I think that is awesome that you all are going on to get your Masters degree, I am undecided yet. Maybe we could all do the Masters cohort through St. E. when they offer that. It definitely helps to have friends you know go through it with you.

    4. I also agree this class will lead to many colorful conversations about ethical topics. I think we will learn a great deal about each other and walk away with a better understanding of our owe views and beliefs.

    5. I can not imagine the ethical dilemma you must face every day working in the ER.
Thanks you and all the other ER nurses for the hard work you do!

    6. Shirley I agree! I'm so intrigued to see where some of these conversations lead us. I like to hear opinions from other disciplines of nursing.

  2. Hello! My name is Jodi Clifford. This is actually my first online course so this is definitely a learning experience! I work in the emergency department at St. Elizabeth, Edgewood campus. I enjoy spending my free time with my family and enjoying the outdoors. Upon completion of my BSN, I plan to strive for a MSN. As a nurse, I believe it is easy to complete day to day task and often not embellish on the ethical principals of your actions or others. I am excited to learn and "think outside the box" during this class. It will be interesting to see what everyone has to say!

    3. While this is not my first online class, it is the first one that we have to "blog". I agree that we will need to "think outside the box" for this class and believe that there will be some interesting, thought provoking discussions.

    4. I agree, the online work is a little intimidating! Huge learning curve! I thought about that when I was looking at the website for insurance through the affordable care act. We all USE computers at work and have help if needed there, I wonder how people feel who need to sign up online and have little or no experience with computers. That's the kick in the rear I need sometimes to tell myself I can do this!

    5. I am with you Jodi. Its funny that you have it your mind to think about things a certain way and then when things are presented to you in a different perspective it may change how you think. I think that will definately be helpful when caring for patients!

  4. Hello everybody! I am a wife and a mother to an almost two year old little boy. One of the main reasons I wanted to go back to school to obtain my BSN was to be a good role model for my little guy and so he could have the best childhood he could ever want. I do wish to go on and get my MSN once my BSN is completed since one of my passions is diabetes education. I'm looking for to discussing medical ethics with each and everyone of you!

    2. Diabetes education is something that is ALWAYS needed in the medical profession. I hate when patients come in and they have not been properly educated about their diabetes. We as nurses know how important education is to the patients and also the family members. Patients are'nt able to properly take care of themselves when they are uneducated. What a great area of nursing you are going into. Good luck!!!

      Delete
    3. When we have an patient with a new diagnosis of diabetes we have to set the up with an appointment before discharge with a specialist. It amazes me how long it takes for them to be seen. There is definitely a great need in this area.

      Delete
    4. Serving as a role model is one of the most important things we can do for our children! And as a nurse, providing diabetes education is so important. A new diagnosis of diabetes must be incredibly scary. Providing the needed education helps to establish the foundation for a healthy future for each of those patients. It is good to get to know you!

      Delete
    5. Diabetic education is one of my favorite things. So many times people pass patients off as noncompliant. It's when you sit and talk to them you realize that they were just never taught, they didn't understand their education, or they were never able to figure out how to make diabetes with their budget or other disabilities.

  5. Hi my name Is Shelley, I've worked TCU for about 9 years. I want to continue my education to become a NP specializing in cardiology. When I'm not working I spend my time with my family, and I'm expecting my second child in June. As nurses we are faced with ethical dilemma's everyday and I hope to gain a new perspective during this course.

    3. Shelley,
Your goal to be a Cardiology NP is awesome. I have given quite a lot of thought to where I am going, but cannot make up my mind. I love teaching and that may be where I eventually land.
I hope I am still in touch with you when you graduate and obtain your NP license. Good luck! You can do it!

  7. Hi my name is Andrea Kaiser and I am an RN at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Labor and Delivery. I am married and a mother of two little boys, Cole and Graham. When I am not working or at school I love to go hiking with my family and enjoying the outdoors. I plan on continuing school to get my Nurse Practitioner and practice in Pediatrics. I am excited to learn more about biomedical ethics. I am sure we will come up with some good discussions.

    1. I love spending time outdoors with my family as well!! I am SO ready for warm weather and vacation! Pediatrics was a secondary interest for me, I've always had a passion for children, however I do love the work that we do on 6D! Thankfully there's someone passionate about all aspects of nursing! That's what makes nursing so flexible and special!

  8. Hi everyone! My name is Kelli Henson. I've worked on 6D TCU (heart failure and peritoneal dialysis) at Edgewood since I graduated with my RN in 2008. I recently accepted the Team Leader position on our unit and still work one shift per week on the floor. I enjoy patient care and the endless differences we can have on our patient's lives. My short term goal is to successfully complete this program and be role model to my children and coworkers. This is my first online class (to include discussion boards, etc.), it's a bit nerve-wrecking, but I'm sure we will all be successful! It has been a pleasure to have met all you since starting the cohort! When I'm not at work, at school, or on this laptop posting blogs, I enjoy spending time with my husband (of 15 years) and my children (ages 4 and 6), they are the love of my life!! I'm excited (and nervous) to start this online journey, and hope that I'll learn more about all of you through our discussions, and maybe a little more about myself.

    2. I went to UC for two years, then transferred to Beckfield to complete my RN. The waiting list at UC for clinics was SO LONG....I didn't want to wait. Online classes are okay...I just worry about missing deadlines because of the unfamiliarity. We CAN DO IT!!

I am a medsurg nurse at Florence. I have worked at Florence for almost 11 years. Prior to becoming a nurse I was a transporter and a clerk. Completing this program will help me become a more well rounded nurse for my patients and coworkers. I am interested in continuing to receive my master's to pursue a future in leadership or education. I am looking forward to this class as I enjoy friendly discussions and learning from others by seeing their views on life.

  10. Hi my name is Donna Willis. I am married, have 2 sons and 2 granddaughters who I absolutely adore. I love spending time with my family.
I have worked at St Elizabeth for 20 years. I am a Hospice nurse and work on the inpatient Hospice unit. I am looking forward to the information this class is going to provide and discuss in a much needed area. I hope to take away a better understanding of some of the ethically issues that we deal with in health care such as quality of life vs quantity of life. Death and dying is a very touchy subject that many do not like to discuss. I am looking forward to the discussions and opinions of my classmates and Dr Cate.

    1. As an emergency room nurse, my natural instinct is to focus on the physiological aspects of care to the patient. I tend to avoid conversations about death and dying. It is often difficult for me to realize that not all patients that I care for want to be resuscitated and their priority is to live the best quality of life they can. I am excited as well to discuss this topic in the future!

    2. I have so much great respect for all the Hospice nurses in the world. Thank you for all you do! I can not wait to discuss this topic with you more!

I admire the work you do

    4. I will be forever grateful for the hospice nurses that took wonderful care of my Dad and my grandmother. They both were able to die with dignity at home because of hospice. I can't say enough wonderful things about the care both of them received while in hospice. They were compassionate, caring and understanding with both family members and also the extended family. My grandmother's nurses actually stayed through the night for 1 week before she passed away. THANK YOU for doing what you do!!!

    5. I too have a special place in my heart for hospice nurses. It was a hospice nurse that took care of a family member when I was a teenager that spiked my interest in becoming a nurse myself. I agree that death and dying is a very touchy subject and I wish that doctors would begin having conversations with patients and their families before the "very end" I think people deserve to know their prognosis.

  11. Hi, my name is Carla Parham. I am married and have 3 daughters, all of which can't wait for this year to be over :). It's always been a goal of mine to get my BSN, but family and finances kept me away far too long. Now, I hope this experience will be a lesson to my own children not to push school back, but to continue on all the way. I have been at St. E. for 11 years, a nurse for 19, and most of it has been cardiac. I currently work a split role, in cardiac surgery recovery and also infection control. I used to enjoy reading, shopping, baking, and gardening in my spare time, but I have none now. I would not change anything however, because I am so thankful to be in the TAP program, without the financial burdens that I would have on my own. Also, it helps knowing we are almost halfway done and it will be over in the blink of an eye!

Hello, my name is Cynthia (Cindy) Jernigan. I work at St E Grant on the inpatient unit.
I love spending time with my family, cooking, shopping, going to the movies and volunteering in my community.
My goal for this class is to become more in tune with ethical issues. I suppose my educational goal is to go wherever this journey takes me. I am considering a masters degree in education or leadership.
One interesting fact about me is I once made a skydive and I want to conquer another fear (a bucket list of sorts). I want to go to the Sears Building 103 floor clear platform.
It is great to be in this class and I have made many new friends. It is a pleasure to know you all and I am looking forward to a long and lasting friendship with you all.

  17. Hi All!! I'm Robin Jackson and thanks to Dr. Cate I'm here and blogging!! I'm an ICU nurse at Florence and I have been an ICU nurse for 19 years though only 9 years have been with St Elizabeth. I have 2 adult children, Samantha and Beau, and 4 grandchildren below the age of 7. It is a wonderful thing being a grandma!
With my job in the ICU I see the death and dying process occasionally, with and without ethical concerns, and I can't wait to see someone else's view on the topic.
This class is going to be AWESOME!

  18. I forgot to include why I'm here....I thought about going back for my BSN for a few years now and thanks to St. Elizabeth's generous contribution I made the leap! How things have changed! Graduating is my short term goal (as if there is a thought that we won't) and I'm contemplating my Masters in Nursing Education. I want to be a nurse forever and I'm not for sure my body will comply with that wish so the direction I want to head towards is education. Still nervous about the whole idea though.

  20. Hello! My name is Cindy Harney. My husband Phil and I have a 15 year old son, Sam, and an 18 year old “host-student” daughter, Catherine. We have 2 dogs, a bloodhound named Abby and a greyhound named Baylor. I work for the Skilled Nursing Unit in Florence and worked med-surg and hospice prior to that. I look forward to graduation from the RN-BSN program and any new opportunities it may hold. I am very interested in the area of Palliative care. I believe that Palliative care can provide quality while not shortening the lives of those with chronic and life threatening diseases. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, baking, and fishing. I have enjoyed getting to know my fellow classmates with this blog!

  21. Hi everyone, my name is Monica Steffen. My husband Gary and I have been married for 31 years, we have 2 daughters, 2 sons and a granddaughter. I am one of 13 children (#11 in line). I've been a nurse for 31 years and honestly have loved (almost) every minute of it. My second daughter is a nurse, and when I asked her what made her decide to become a nurse, she said that I always seemed to like my job. That's just the kind of influence we want to make with our kids-be happy in your work. I've wanted to finish my BSN for years. After chipping away one class or so at a time when our first three kids were young, I had the youngest in school and some free time on my hands, so I prayed about where my life would go from there. I headed back to school with every intention of finishing quickly. About 6 weeks into the fall session, I found out I was pregnant! (A small miracle as we had difficulty conceiving). God certainly has a sense of humor! I am so thrilled to be where I am, with the women in this cohort and feel so blessed to have this opportunity along with the challenges it brings with it!
